[Sweets for my Sweet] Twix

So, here's the third and last part of my PAMK series: Homemade Twix.

I have to say, I was proudest of the packaging here :). I wrapped two bars each in parchment paper and tied off the ends with red-white baker's twine. Then they got a golden sleeve made from embossing foil (the only gold foil I could get in my small town) which was then adorned with the lettering - on the one side it said Twix and on the other Raider! I printed out the logos, and since I only have a b/w printer, I coloured them with coloured pencils before cutting them out with a sharp cutter. It was quite a lot of work but the result was worth it!

The same applies for the recipe, by the way - of the three recipes I made this one was definitely the most effort. But the result once again was worth it, both in looks and taste.

I covered the Twix with plain chocolate and I'm not sure I would do that again - on the one hand, the plain chocolate balanced out some of the sweetness of the caramel (as much as I like Twix, it's rather sweet!), but on the other hand it wasn't quite the original Twix taste.Your choice whether you prefer the original or the less sweet version! And then there's also Twix White - you can make that with this recipe, too :).

Twix-Riegel

Zutaten
Keks:
225 g Butter
115 g Zucker
250 g Mehl
1/4 TL Backpulver
1/2 TL Salz
1/2 TL Vanilleextrakt
2 EL Milch

Karamell:
450 g weiche Karamellbonbons (z.B. Werthers)
2 EL Milch oder Sahne
1 Prise Salz (optional)

Twix bars

Ingredients
Shortbread:
225 g butter
115 g sugar
250 g flour
1/4 tea spoon baking powder
1/2 tea spoon salt
1/2 tea spoon vanilla extract
2 table spoons milk

Caramel:
450 g soft caramel toffees (e.g. Werthers)
2 table spoons milk or cream
1 pinch of salt (optional)

240 g chocolate (milk, plain or white - as you like it)

In a bowl, beat butter and sugar with a hand mixer or your kitchen machine until light and fluffy. In another bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt. Slowly add to the butter-sugar mixture, beating all the way. Finally, add milk and vanilla extract at low speed.
Wrap the finished dough in cling wrap and put it in the fridge until it has firmed up significantly (mine didn't get very firm so I kneaded in some flour at the end).
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Roll out the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and put it in the oven, baking for approx. 15-20 minutes until the shortbread starts to become slightly golden brown. Take it out and let it cool.
In the meantime, prepare the caramel filling: Melt the caramel toffees in a bain marie and stir in the milk or cream until it is a smooth, liquid mass. (If you have a microwave, you can also melt them in that, that seems to be easier and quicker - but I don't have a microwave.). Pour onto the shortbread and let set. It's quickest if you put the sheet into the freezer!
When the caramel has set, cut into bars. Chop the chocolate and melt in a bain marie. Dunk the bars into the chocolate (that works best with a long-pronged fork or two) and put on parchment paper to set. Again, putting the bars into the freezer helps a lot! As soon as the caramel has set, the bars are ready to be packaged - or eaten on the spot ^_^. (They are best stored in the fridge.)

Do you know Post aus meiner Küche (mail from my kitchen)? It's a (mostly German) swap of the three girls of Zucker, Zimt und Liebe, Tastesheriff and Lykkelig who regularly call for a food swap under a certain theme. For this theme, you then bake, package and send off to your partner a bunch of tasty things and get a package full of them in return.

I heard from it for the first time in the last round which had the theme "Weihnachtsschickerei" (Christmas mail), and I was totally hooked. The next time I wanted to take part, too! And in March, it was finally time: the fifth round of Post aus meiner Küche started, and for me my first round. The theme was childhood memories, and I'm sure that a lot of variations of Kalter Hund (a cake made from chocolate and cookies), sweets as we used to buy them at the bakery and marble cake traveled across the country these days.

On Tuesday, my package finally arrived at my swap partner Jenny's (I was already imagining a nasty mailman enjoying Jenny's goodies since it took a very long time to arrive!), and now I can show what I sent her.

I started with some small lemon cakes. Normally that's a real big cake, but for mailing the miniature size was ideal, and this way I also could try my small paper baking moulds by Birkmann. Aren't they pretty?

The pound cake was one of the first cakes I ever made, if not even the very first, from my first baking book. To this day I like making it from time to time since it's very easy and fast to do but is very moist and tasty. Therefore I immediately knew I had to include it when I heard the theme!

Next, I also put in a bag of sugar-roasted almonds (also using my wonderful new stamp for the first time. Isn't it great?) - for many, these almonds are tied to Christmas but they remind me of fairs, like the spring fair in my hometown on the Bösmannsecker or the autumn festival on the Wasen which we visited every year for a while to celebrate my birthday. My mother loved getting a bag of roasted almonds while my father was more the Magenbrot (spiced bread) type - I could get some from both of them. Since making Magenbrot sounded a bit more complicated, though, I decided to go with the almonds here ;).

And finally, there is Twix - or should I say, Raider? Everyone knows the iconic slogan they used when they changed the name back in the 80's: "Raider heißt jetzt Twix - sonst ändert sich nix." (Raider is now called Twix - everything else stays the same. It works much better in German, I promise.) Even though I have to admit that I don't recall eating the candy bar all that often, I remember the slogan, too, and it's got such a nostalgic 80's feeling to it. And by now I also love the bar.

I hope you liked the little peek into the Post aus meiner Küche! I will blog the recipes here one after another, too - promised.

And what did I get from Jenny?

Meatballs, potato salad, a bag of sweets and marble cake! You can't see the latter on the picture, though - I admit that I totally forgot preparing Jenny's tasty treats for a photo shoot, and so there's only an Instagram picture to document them. The next time I won't be so lazy and/or forgetful.

Because one thing's for certain: I'll be back for the next PAMK round!

Did you ever hear about this swap or did you take part already?
