[Let them eat cake] Muzen

It's time for Fastnacht or Carnival! For the uninitiated: That's something like Halloween, but in February :p.

I don't really celebrate Fastnacht - while I love the traditional Fastnacht in Rottweil where my grandmother lived, I don't care for the rest, and living in Bonn for several years didn't do anything to warm me to the Carnival celebrated in Cologne and the like. However, that doesn't stop me from enjoying the traditional fritters often served during Carnival. And therefore I yesterday made some I used to bake with my mom: Muzen.

You have to know that originally, my mom is from the Rhineland, and though she isn't one for Carnival either, really, she enjoys those fritters during that time as much as I do. I don't know any more why we stopped doing that ... Maybe because we're all a bit overweight and those things have about a million calories? Oh, who cares!

My version is alcohol-free, though - the original recipe calls for rum but since I don't drink alcohol, I don't find it necessary to have a bottle of rum standing around for the very rare occasions that I need it for baking. You can always use rum flavour and replace the liquid by something else. However, if you prefer baking with rum, just replace 2 table spoons of milk by the same amount of rum and leave out the rum aroma!

Muzen

Zutaten
60g Butter
50g Zucker
1 Ei
250g Mehl
7 EL Milch
1 Prise Salz
einige Tropfen Rumaroma
Mehl zum Ausrollen
500g Pflanzenfett zum Frittieren
75g Puderzucker zum Bestäuben

Butter in einem Topf zerlassen. Zucker, Ei und Rumaroma unterschlagen.
Mehl in eine Schüssel geben. In die Mitte eine Mulde drücken. Flüssige Butter – Zucker – Masse mit Milch und Salz reingeben. Gut verkneten.

Muzen

Ingredients
60g butter
50g sugar
1 egg
250g flour
7 table spoons milk
1 pinch of salt
a few drops of rum flavour
flour for rolling out
500g vegetable fat for frying
75g confectioner's sugar

Melt butter in a pot, mix in sugar, egg and rum flavour, beating well.
Fill flour into a bowl and make a depression in the middle. Add the liquid butter-sugar mixture, milk and salt. Knead well.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface until about 3 mm thick dick. Cut into diamonds of about 14 cm with a pastry wheel. Fry the pieces at approx. 160°C in 5 minutes until golden brown. Remove using a slotted spoon and drain on some tissue paper. Dust with confectioner's sugar.

The recipe is for 20 pieces - however, my Muzen were significantly smaller so I got about twice as much. I didn't have a pastry wheel, so I just used a pizza cutter ;).

Some tips for frying: If you don't have a thermometer to check the temperature, use a wooden spoon and hold the handle into the fat. When small bubbles appear alongside it, it's hot enough. You can fry a few pieces at the same time - I checked, they don't adhere to each other. Turn the pieces over one or twice while frying so that both sides get brown. That can be difficult at times since the pieces develop their own will, it seems ^^!
And then enjoy! Helau, Alaaf, Narri Narro and all that stuff people say during Carnival!

As you can see, I gave my recipe category a name. In the future you will find all recipes under the heading "Let them eat cake" :). I plan to categorise my entries in such a way overall. "Let them eat cake" and "Looking back on ..." are the first established headings, others will follow. I'm currently working on a new layout for the blog, and they will get a nice place on that.

I also plan to have social media buttons in the new layout - so far, you can see in the layout that you can follow me via GFC, Bloglovin and Blog-Connect. I also made a Facebook page for my blog, though! I'd love it if you visited me there and gave me a like :).

Hallo und willkommen! ./. Hello and welcome!

Who am I?
My name is Mareike but online I'm mostly known under the name Flowerstar, often shortened to Flower. When in doubt, just call me any of those or just "Hey, you!" ;). I'm 32 years at the moment, a translator by trade and I'm sharing a flat with my best friend in Hirschlanden, a small town near Stuttgart (Germany). I hope to share my creative activities with you on this blog.

Was findet man hier?

What will you find here?
As a creative person, I'm a bit of a jack-of-all-trades: I love trying out new stuff and always go through phases where I'm totally enamoured with one thing which soon falls out of favour when something new and fresh comes along.

Sewing is the most important craft for me, no doubt about that, and it's my favourite creative hobby. I have been sewing a big part of my wardrobe myself since I was 13 or 14. I "specialise" in skirts and dresses but also love doing patchwork or sewing accessories.

But otherwise I do almost everything to do with fabric, yarn and so on. This includes, among others: Spinning, knitting, crocheting, tablet weaving, embroidery (particularly kogin-zasshi, a Japanese embroidery technique) ... And there is much more on the list of things I really want to try one day.

Good food is another passion. I love cooking and baking - cooking is mostly a matter of "quick and easy", though, so it will be mostly cakes and cookie recipes that will be found here. (I also used to do bento but since I'm working from home now, I no longer have the opportunity, sadly.)

Drawing and writing are part of my life, too. They are mostly closely connected to another hobby, namely roleplaying. Therefore, you might not be familiar with many of the characters depicted - but I hope you like the pictures and little stories anyway.

And finally, there will be photos - first and foremost of my creative stuff, of course, but also about everything going on around me.

Enjoy!
