Klassischer Milchreis {Let's cook together}

Ina of Whatinaloves has started a joint cooking and baking series for this year: Let's cook together. For it, she gives a theme for every month, and on the 10th of every month, the entries are published and collected. I really like those shared series, and so I'd like to join in occasionally. The theme for February is "Rice pudding". And I love rice pudding!

So here's a classic basic rice pudding recipe for you :).

Milchreis (für zwei Personen zum Sattessen)

Zutaten
1 Vanilleschote
 150 g Milchreis
750 ml Milch
1 Prise Salz
1 EL Zitronenschale
50 g Zucker
40 g Butter

Rice pudding (serves two as a full meal)

Ingredients
1 vanilla bean
150 g rice for rice pudding
750 ml milk
1 pinch of salt
1 table spoon grated lemon zest
50 g sugar
40 g butter

Heat up a pot with the vanilla bean, rice, milk and salt while stirring. Let cook with a lid at low heat for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add lemon zest, sugar and butter. Stir in until well combined and let cook another 5 minutes, stirring once. Remove the pot from the heat and let rest for 15 minutes. Remove the vanilla bean and serve warm, with cinnamon and sugar or fruit.

The recipe is from the lovely cookbook "Deutschland vegetarisch" which I got for Christmas. I have to admit that the rice pudding is the only recipe I've tried though a lot of the rest also looks lovely. But this recipe is really great, it's the first time that I managed not to burn the rice pudding. And I really like the lemon flavour thanks to the lemon zest (if you like, you can also add some lemon juice at the end - I haven't tried that so far). I made some minor adjustments, though, since I thought it used way too much sugar. It might be that it's also because I'm using soy milk when cooking for M2 and me, and that's sweeter than cow's milk. But even with normal milk, way less sugar is entirely enough (the original recipe calls for 100 - 150 g). The rice pudding was supposed to be for four people, too, which I think would only be enough as a dessert. Or maybe M2 and I are just gluttons ;).

How do you like your rice pudding best, with cinnamon and sugar or fruit? Or are you not a fan of sweet rice at all?

Last week my friends and I met again for roleplaying. And as usual, while we were talking about the date and such, I immediately had to ask: "Oooh, so we're meeting, should I bake something? What would you like, how about this or that, or do you have any wishes?" My poor friends - but so far they're good sports about it :).

This time they decided they'd like some cookues, with dark chocolate and something fruity. I immediately got the idea to combine dark chocolate with raspberries ... Unfortunately I had to find that despite dozens of cookie recipes online, no one else had had the same idea. All recipes just paired raspberries with white chocolate! So I finally though, what you gotta do, just make one up yourself. Of course this meant that I had to bake the cookies once for practice to see if they turn out how I wanted them to. A sacrifice M2 and me were happy to make :)!

The first try turned out quite well, and so the second try, with some minor adjustments, resulted in this recipe:

Chocolate cookies mit Himbeeren
(basierend auf einem Cookies-Grundrezept von lecker.de)

Zutaten:
125 g Butter
175 g Zucker
1 Prise Salz
1 Ei
1 Pk. Vanillezucker
200 g Mehl
1 TL Backpulver

Guten Appetit!

Chocolate cookies with raspberries

Ingredients:
125 g butter
175 g sugar
1 pinch of salt
1 egg
1 package of vanilla sugar
200 g flour
1 tea spoon baking powder
2 tablespoon cocoa powder
100 g plain chocolate
150 g raspberries (fresh or frozen)

Preheat the oven to 175°C. If you use fresh raspberries, wash them. If you use frozen, best let them defrost in a sieve so they do not get quite as squishy.

Chop the chocolate and let it melt in a double boiler. In the meantime, beat butter and sugar until fluffy and stir in the egg, then add the melted chocolate.

Mix salt, flour, baking powder, sugar, vanilla sugar and cocoa powder and stir into the wet ingredients bit by bit. Finally add the raspberries (do not stir too much to avoid squishing them). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Use two tea spoons or an ice cream scoop to scoop small batches of the dough and place them on the baking sheets. Bake for approx. 15 minutes on the middle rack.

Enjoy!

I admit I wouldn't have minded them being even more chocolatey but they were very soft and fluffy but still had some bite. So I think they're a success!

Do you like your raspberry cookies with white chocolate, too, or would this dark variety be something for you, too?

[Looking back on ...] Januar 2014

So, how did you get started into 2014? January was over in a flash again (somehow I keep repeating myself in the introduction ...) - work is back to business as usual, and there were some nice things in my private life, too. Apart from a few nice evenings with friends (finally we're roleplaying again, yay!), a new sewing machine got to move in with me. Sorry if it seems as if I keep talking about little else but I'm so happy about this :)!

But somehow I was very lazy about taking pictures this month. Maybe I was still hungover from the many pictures I took in December ;). So the look back is rather short this time.

While I didn't have a (functioning) sewing machine, I prepared and cut a lot so that I could start again right away. / Finally it's light outside when I go running, without me having to throw on my running clothes immediately after finishing work. / I'm terribly bad at keeping my calendar up to date but I still try every year. This one is quite pretty considering I found it at the grocery store, isn't it?

Fertig. Yum! / Mein neues Schätzchen :).

I'm no longer using convenience products when I cook but Nisshin yakisoba are an exception. I still add a ton of fresh vegetables, though! / Ready to eat. Yum! / My new baby :).

Experimentelle Chocolate Cookies mit Himbeeren. Rezept kommt bald!

Rather experimental chocolate cookies with raspberries. Recipe to follow soon! / The baker gave me a second chocolate croissant for free because it was "so small". I believe that she actually wanted to do something nice for me since she had seen that I was having a bad day. That was so sweet! / New magazines with a lot of inspiration. I'm looking forward to read them and try out a lot!

Ich hoffe, ihr hattet einen guten Januar! Was habt ihr so im Februar vor?

RTH Tarot: Knight of Cups

Let's continue my River Twine tarot series! This picture was my Secret Senta present for Pathmark's player - coincidentally (or not so coincidentally) a friend of mine from the German EQ fandom.

Pathmark is a very cute and nice character, a young scout and hunter - at the beginning I even played with the idea of adopting him (but in the mean time, I would never give up my Snowfall and I'm happy he has found a lovely and committed player in A.).

The Knight of Cups is a very open character who loves life, and frequently he's a messenger which fits with Pathmark's role as a scout. I deviated a bit from the motif of the original tarot card, at least in the fact that Pathmark isn't riding. But of course his wolf Bonetrail is at his side nevertheless. I guess he's having a break on one of his scouting trips ... I admit that I often struggle to draw wolves, so I cheated a bit with Bonetrail here - on the other hand, I think it's quite coherent that way.

I'm already planning the next tarot card - I hope you'll enjoy seeing more of them :).

The new year is already almost three weeks old by now, all the end-of-the-year and happy-new-year posts are gone - it's time to spend some time on thinking about what 2014 will bring, isn't it? Bine (Was Eigenes) and Andrea (Jolijou) have started a new project this year, Short Stories, in which the focus should be more on writing than on posting lots of pretty pictures. And since I'm a much better writer than photographer (or so I think), that's just right up my alley ;).

I'm of two minds about this whole resolutions business - and do I imagine that or is that a rather new trend which has only started to spread the last few years or so? In any case, I'm very bad in making resolutions - or rather, I make a lot of them but they don't live long. As soon as I get the feeling that I haven't done enough for my resolutions for a while, I quickly get into a "oh, why even bother" mood, and that's that. And the new year as the time for the resolution to change something is rather random, too, when you think about it. The best time for it actually is ... now.

So I don't really want to make really hard and fast resolutions or set any big goals, neither at the new year nor in general. Rather, my resolution is a wish: I want to do more things that make me happy.

(Bild von/image from Botanical Paperworks)

That's something I always try to do, sure. But I want to have a look at what I do and whether it really makes me happy more often. There are so many things I'm doing because I'm used to it, because it's a habit, because I don't want to disappoint others, because I feel like I should. And that's kind of sad - I want to do things I really enjoy. Of course, you cannot totally stop doing things you don't love (I can't afford rejecting every job at work that I don't enjoy - my bosses would not be happy!), but you still can try and think about whether there isn't another way or if it's worth it. That's what I want to do more often now, and I want to have the courage to say no more often, to others but also to myself. Because quite often, I'm the only one expecting me to do all this stuff ...

There are many more small things I want to do but I think this motto summarises them well since they are all things I hope will make me happy. So I'll leave it at that and hope that this wish will not only accompany me through 2014 but beyond.

You can find more short stories about resolutions here.

Did you make any resolutions for 2014, too? Or do you think this resolution business is totally overrated?

Macht keinen Sinn? Macht nix. Muss nicht immer alles Sinn machen, was ich hier mache :).

For Christmas, I didn't only have the snacks I showed you in my last entry for presents, of course, but also some things sewn and made by me - I was sitting at my sewing machine until the evening before Christmas Eve! So happy that I could finish everything in time. Today I'm showing you the first part of those things - the rest will be posted another time since it doesn't fit thematically. That doesn't make sense? Too bad, but not everything I'm doing on here has to make sense :).

And here's another entry in the series "My family makes me sew the weirdest things". Those are weights I made for my father.

My dad has been suffering from severe pain in the hips and knees for a while now - well, he isn't getting any younger! Next year will be his seventieth birthday ... That's why he got physical therapy (because of the hip problems, not because he's almost seventy), and they also showed him some exercise to make at home. For those to be really effective, you need weights like this.

And why buy them in a shop when you have a daughter who can surely sew them? So I got commissioned to sew him weights. I need some tries again until the length and flexibility of the filled cuffs was right!

They are filled with bird sand and have velcro closures. Each is half a kilogram. The fabric is a robust but terribly bleeding fabric of unknown type, presumably cotton. All in all they are more of a "not pretty but handy" kind - but for their purpose, that might be the right thing, looking for prettiness might be a bit misplaced here ;).

My mom also got something for her joints (yes, she is also getting along a bit ...) - these pads are filled with rape seed. They can be heated in the oven like cherry pit or spelt pads but you can also use them to exercise your fingers when they are cold. The small pads are about the size of my palm, so they're the perfect size to hold them in your hand and play with them. The big one is about 10 x 20 cm, so it's a good size to put on your belly or back.

I can only say, I'm lucky that my sewing machine still pulled through when I worked on these presents! Because when I wanted to sew something again last machine, I gave up in frustration at the end ... And so I have to face the fact that my dear trusty Brother machine has seen its best years after fifteen years, and it is time for a new one. I had it repaired last year but that only helped for a short time. I don't really feel like having it repaired again now, only to have the same problems in a month or two ... And so I looked at some sewing machines on Saturday and have ordered a new one now. I'm waiting inpatiently for the call that it has arrived, oh, I can't wait! Then I can start again, because I have quite some things I want to do this year!

If you are sewing, too, tell me what machine you're using?! Even though I already decided, I'm always curious ;).

So Christmas is over for a while now, and finally I get around to show you the presents from my kitchen I gave my family and friends for Christmas. It was the first time I did that for all of them in addition to the actual present but I definitely plan to make that a new tradition! They all thought that was a good idea, too :).

I made a big batch of sugar-crusted almonds and Christmas almonds for everyone. I already posted my recipe for sugar-crusted almonds a while ago - you can read it here. I found the recipe for the Christmas almonds on Assata's blog Neulich im Leben (German only in the link) and loved the combination of dark chocolate and sugar-crusted almonds. I think they will become part of my Christmas repertoire now :).

Tja.)

On Christmas, I finally got to see one of my oldest friends again - even though she spends almost every weekend at her parents' in our hometown, we didn't meet up for more than half a year. So I hadn't even given her a birthday present ... Therefore she got a bit of an extra - honey-roasted spicy nuts. The recipe for this you can find on Conny's blog Seelenschmeichelei (German link again, sorry).

(Originally I had planned to give those honey-roasted nuts to more people. That's not possible when you burn half of them, though. Bummer.)

And last, but not least, I want to show you what we had for tea on Christmas (in addition to a lot of Christmas cookies, of course) - a cinnamon roll Christmas tree. I stole the idea from an acquaintance who brought a similar tree to a Christmas party. Unfortunately mine didn't turn out quite as Christmas tree-like as I had wanted. It's really easy to make, though: You need a basic yeast dough recipe like this one. Roll out the dough and brush it with a butter-sugar-cinnamon mixture (ours could have used a little bit more of that), then cut it into rectangles of roughly the desired tree size and stack them onto each other. Then cut off two rectangles at the bottom, leaving the "stump" in the middle, and two triangles at the top so you get a tip. Now you cut "branches" from the rest and twist them so that you can see the different layers. Finally, just put it in the oven and bake it like a plaited yeast bread.

I hope this explanation makes sense ... If it doesn't, please feel free to ask!

Did you give away homemade presents for Christmas, too?
